Det vetenskapliga namnet "Cynodonteae" fick denna tribus av Barthélemy Charles Joseph Dumortier i publikationen Observations sur les Graminées de la flore de belgique när den gavs ut 1824. Typsläkte för denna tribus är Cynodon.
