• Distinguished from E. micromeris by its more numerous and tightly appressed spines. Furthermore, Parfitt & Zimmerman 1.c. say it is `an obligate outcrosser' whereas E. micromeris is autogamous; that it flowers later (Apr–Jun compared with Feb–Apr), and that its fls tend to open in mid-afternoon when those of E. micromeris are already closing. They also report that where their ranges overlap the two taxa usually occur on different geological substrates, and grow intermingled in Coahuila with no evidence of hybridization: `The interspecific differences have been obscured by published illustra¬tions of misidentified specimens and by inaccurate spine counts'.
